THE PRELUDE OF A CAPTIVATING STORY - Another weekend was coming for Ciriana, managing partner of a Rome subsidiary of a blue chip American consultancy. She was not a great fan of Friday evenings. Returning to an empty apartment from her top-floor office, with a breathtaking panoramic view of roofs and steeples of Roman churches, reminded her painfully of her solitude.
We all know that Italians are among the best-dressed people on the earth, but why is this? What is it about their fashion and clothing that always makes it look so good, and distinguishes it? After twenty years of intense observation and attempted emulation, my conclusion is that it comes down to two things – details and tailoring.
The two pleasures imbedded in Italian culture and way of life, especially for women: fashion-shopping and having a coffee. I must say I know few women who don’t enjoy both. It’s an irresistible combination, an expression of pleasure and a way of being.
In a society that cherishes beauty and style as the quintessence of life, women can get carried away. With all the glossy magazines, social media and television advertising, it’s hard not to see the latest anti-wrinkle creams, the ‘IT’ bag that a Kardashian is holding, the newest stilettos for this season, jewellery to match, scented candles, perfume…need I go on.
